Editorial Reviews for Noel:

Bringing Josh Groban’s majestic yet intimate voice to Christmas music is truly a gift this holiday season. The young Adult Contemporary star’s fourth studio album brings together the traditional such as Silent Night with the contemporary such as I’ll Be Home For Christmas and the new, Thankful. Featuring duets with Country’s Faith Hill and R&B’s Brian McKnight, and inspirational music’s master choir, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and produced by the illustrious David Foster the album’s wide appeal promises that a timeless Christmas music classic will be beneath the tree this year. The Grammy-nominated, twenty-something, pop-classical phenomenon's fourth studio album is an expertly accomplished entry to the holiday marketplace. Noël tackles the familiar sounds of holiday music with a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material. The songs range from the sacred to the secular, while Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There's even a song with a gospel choir directed by Kirk Franklin. Produced yet again by crossover maestro David Foster, the arrangements never overwhelm the songs. Groban's smooth and supple vocals can be hard to categorize--seeing how his range is somewhere in-between a high baritone and a low tenor--but he always finds and emphasizes the emotional core of these songs. And whether they have origins in pop or classical music seems not to matter. The addition of messages from troops stationed in Iraq on top of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is undeniably heart-wrenching, while the album's highlight is its most spare song, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," which finds Groban alone at his piano, sounding very much like some kind of angel. --Mike McGonigal
Customer reviews for Noel:
- Nothing new (2008-11-05)

Nothing new - considering Josh Grban's incredible voice, I was expecting more. Also, the CD audio quality seemed harsh.
- Just beautiful! (2008-10-26)

This CD has musics that many other artists have already recorded, but Josh Groban performs them with such beauty, softness, and delicateness that is impossible not to fall in love for them all over again. The music will fill your home with all the good memories of Christmas, it will touch your heart. Highly recommended.
- Very disappointed! (2008-10-18)

If you listen to the samples only, his voice sound great. But I expect more from Josh. After we bought it, my husband and I kept skipping to the next song because the music is so predictable, monotonous. Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus were sung with good vocal but no emotion; Little Drummer Boy it sounded like he was bored....
As for the arrangements, they were pretty in a few tracks, but the arrangement is too predictable for a young artist like Josh. If you like strong operatic vocal and grand orchestra, buy Andera Bocelli instead. His voice is so SOULFUL or something ... that gave me goose bumps personally. Listen to Sacred Arias and you know what I meant. We bought the Deluxe pack with DVD he sangs at some curc in Europe. What a treat both for our eyes and ears! Andrea Bocelli carries the song with soul and I can't believe is voice LIVEat some high note, it's spectacular for a LIVE audience. I think that CD is great for a holiday album.
For Josh, I would have expected as at least as good as Mr. Bocelli because Josh recorded this in a studio. I kept listening and looked for for his soul and didn't hear it. Very disappointed!
(By te way, we all know that Josh doesn't do well LIVE in "Live at the Greek (L.A. theater). I think Josh should develop his vocal more to be able to perform Live well. (In studio, the sound is mixed and enginnered a lot). Even Hugh Grant did very well in "Music and Lyrics" soundtrack!
- I am "Thankful" for this truly beautiful Christmas CD (2008-10-15)

I am a huge fan of Josh Groban's gift of voice and "Noel - The Christmas Album" is filled with stunning arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs which reflect both joy and poignancy through the season of goodwill. I love Josh's take on the traditional "Little Drummer Boy"; but the new "Thankful" (co-written by David Foster/Carole Bayer Sager/Richard Page) is destined to become another holiday standard (along with Michael Buble's take on yet another David Foster/Linda Thompson favourite "Grown-Up Christmas List".) I am thankful for artists like these guys to breathe so much life into beautiful music written by the experts. My only wish is for a new arrangement of the David Foster/Carole Bayer Sager penned classic "The Prayer" (teaming Josh with the equally stunning Heather Headley.) I still must say I love this album collaboration; and that it occupies a special place on my Holiday Music shelf with Maureen McGovern's "Christmas With Maureen McGovern". Prepare to be moved!!!
