Who We Are and Why We Do What We Do

Search this site!

CRANKY SEZ: It'll take seven weeks to cover the country but the best movie we've screened in years -- it's called -- Slumdog Millionaire -- now becomes available for some. Find it. See it. Go from thinking "I'm glad that's not my life" to walking out with an incredibly big smile on your face. More below.

[LAST] WEEKEND TOP TEN: Family friendly Madagasgar: Escape 2 Africa destroyed the competition with a $63.5 millions take. Newbie Role Models was a distant second ($19M). High School Musical 3 drops to third ($9M) with Changeling and Zach and Miri Make a Porno rounding out the Top Five. THE REST OF THE TOP TEN: Soul Men, Saw V and The Haunting of Molly Hartley, The Secret Life of Bees, and Eagle Eye

WATCHMEN A brand new trailer hit the net Friday via ubersite Yahoo Movies.  For those that want the complete set, the first teaser is available also: Windows HD; Windows std; IPOD; Quicktime HD and Quicktime std. You can also download teaser posters and wallpaper while you wait for March.

New Releases:

Soul Men

Soul Men stars Samuel  L Jackson and Bernie Mac with Sean Hayes and Isaac Hayes. Two members of a 1960s soul trio are forced to reunite when their lead singer, who found fame as a solo artist, drops dead. Said reunion involves an LA to NYC cross country drive and, excepting the four letter words, the laughs fly fast and furious. The final work from both Mac and Hayes is highly recommended as long as you don't mind a heaping pile of "f" words.

Role Models

Role Models stars Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks in a just as funny as that film to the left, but with a caucasian cast. Said crack goes for the plethora of "f" words as well. In this case, though, we can give you a full review: Cranky's movie reviews

madagascar 2

Madagascar 2 was missed because of our medical junk. Given it's utter family friendliness we know from past experience that those of you with li'l kidlets will want lots of images for their computers. So get yer wallpapers here

quantum of solace

As dull as the title is intriguing, if you haven't seen Casino Royale just before Quantum Of Solace, the new Bondflick in totally and completely incom-prehensible.
What is it we've been saying forever? You shouldn't have to the source material to get the story. This Bond waits for the rental pile. It'll make a good double feature with Casino Royale..

BEST OF THE YEAR
Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Million-aire, (ltd) courtesy Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, follows two Indian brothers and a castaway little girl from orphanhood to adulthood, poverty and quick thinking to indentured servitude and organized crime to incredibly insane warm fuzzies. The Best of the Year. Cranky's movie review

Hysterically funny
sex drive

Sex Drive stars nobody but OTT is an incredibly funny (very rude and very crude) and very raunchy comedy as a young male virgin goes to meet his internet gal pal, to "take care of" his problem. Cranky's movie review

A Bomb
What Just Happened

What Just Happened stars Robert DeNiro as a Hollywood producer pushed to the limit by two projects: one needing to be finished before the Cannes festival; one helmed by a loudmouthed Bruce Willis. Sean Penn guest stars. Cranky's movie review

wait and rent.
happy-go-lucky

Happy-Go-Lucky from Writer/Director Mike Leigh stars Sally Hawkins as Poppy, a free spirit who won't let any negatives in her life get her down. In this case, the theft of  her bicycle prompts her to take driving lessons from a sad, angry instructor named Scott. Leigh has done much better. This is a here today gone today wait to rent flick.

Payne-ful. Very.
Max Payne

Max Payne stars Mark Wahlberg as a sullen cop searching for the murderer of his wife and child. Incom-prehensibly adapted and shortened from its video game roots (Marvel fanboys may scream "It's The Punisher!!!" now) only the last 20 minutes of 100 are visually interesting. That's for the stoners who need to do proper math. Everyone else, go elsewhere and avoid this disappointment.

Stone's Dubya
W

Oliver Stone's W. stars Josh Brolin as President Dubya. You know, the sitting president. We don't think it'll affect the coming election. This fictionalized fact toes the line. Cranky's movie review

ON OUR BEST LIST
The Duchess

The Duchess stars Kiera Knightley and Ralph Fiennes. A story of an 18th century "open marriage" (sic) turned out to be the biggest surprise of the week. Teenboys excepted (they'll be taking their dates  Ghost Town) this is one of the best films of the year. Cranky's movie review

ON OUR BEST LIST
the express

The Express stars Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown. Once upon a time, negro individuals didn't play college or pro ball. This is the story of the second man to manage that but the first to win the coveted Heisman Trophy in the process.

Great Movie
Ghost Town

Ghost Town stars Ricky Gervais, Tea Leoni and Greg Kinnear -- the former as a dentist who can see ghosts post-surgical complications and the latter as one of those ghosts. Leoni is the widow who steals both their hearts. A very enjoyable, very fluffy and forgotten in three hours dateflick. Teens and happy loving couples on dates go here. [$7]

Real "Film"
Battle in Seattle

Battle in Seattle stars Charlize Theron and Woody Harrelson in a fictional drama set against real life protests and riots at the WTO meetings in Seattle a couple of weeks back. Serious? Yep. Watch-able? Also yep. Serious adults go to this one. [$6.50]

pride glory

Pride and Glory stars Edward Norton and Colin Farrell with Noah Emmerich and Jon Voight. Two brothers and a brother in law, all cops. One good. One bad. One hiding from an bad on-the-job experience. One Father (in-law), Chief of Detectives. One investigation into the on-the-job killing of four other officers. All jammed into two hours. We rarely say it but it's way too much story in way too little time.
