Most of us experience prayers that focus on feelings and thoughts expressed in words, like the prayers read during church or grace at a meal. This is a type of prayer called discursive prayer. Contemplative prayer refers to praying to achieve inner silence so that one can be receptive to the Spirit praying in us. For many, achieving inner silence may be far more difficult than pondering words. Running prayer beads through your fingers may aid in achieving contemplative prayer.
